Break out the lawn chairs and blankets. Family movie night is coming July 26 to Farring Baybrook Park, located off 6th Street.
The fun will begin at 6 p.m. with clowns, games, popcorn and soft drinks, then settle down for a showing of the animated movie "Ratatouille." The movie tells the story of a rat named Remy who lives in Paris and dreams of becoming a top chef instead of raiding the garbage cans and sewers of the city.

For more information about this event, call the Brooklyn and Curtis Bay Coalition Inc. at 410-355-1100.

Children's programs

It's time to sign up for the mid-summer six-week sessions of the North County Recreation Center's Wee Ones and Crafty Kiddos programs.

The new sessions will begin July 31 at the center, 196 Hammonds Lane.

The Wee Ones program is for children ages 12 to 23 months and meets from 9 to 10 a.m. or 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. on Thursdays either. The program includes songs, play time and special crafts for young ones and an accompanying adult. There is a $40 registration fee.

The Crafty Kiddos program is for children ages 2 to 4; the group will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays. During the program, participants will complete three or four projects, including painting, collages and etchings. Each child must be accompanied by an adult for this program. The registration fee is $45.

For details or to register for these or other classes at the center, call 410-222-0036.

Defense works

Maryland Safe Defense safety expert Sharon Kluth will teach participants basic self-defense tips for almost any situation at Harbor Hospital LifeResource Center, 2990 S. Hanover St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 23.

Mrs. Kluth's definition of self defense is not a karate chop to the neck but using one's intelligence to take simple actions to prevent an attack.

There is no charge to attend this workshop, but pre-registration is required.

To register, call the center at 410-350-2563.

Clubs and organizations in the greater Brooklyn Park area can call Maryland Gazette correspondent George Baker at 410-789-4984 for publication of their news, or send e-mail to gpb2@earthlink.net.
