The DCFA Flamengo, a 12-and-under girls futsal team from Severna Park, captured a national title last weekend at the the 23rd U.S. Futsal National Championship held at the Baltimore Convention Center. The Flamengo defeated the reigning Eastern Regional champs, Explosion Fire, 2-1 in Sunday's title game.
The Flamengo, who finished second to the Fire in Boston during regionals in March, won five straight matches to win the first national title for Denison Cabral's futsal academy. DCFA, which is based in Severna Park's Sportsplex, advanced two teams to national title matches and five teams to the semifinals. Flamengo was the only team to take gold.
The team got first-half goals from Jennifer Reilly of Pasadena and Anna Marie Mellis of Millersville, then used strong play from defenders Delia Rapasky (Annapolis) and Madeline Ostraski (Annapolis) and clutch saves from goalie Bridget Bielski (Severna Park) to secure the win.
The Flamengo defeated teams from Boise, Idaho and California on the way to the title. During the five-game stretch, the team received goals from Taylor Green (Severna Park), Jenna Clark (Kent Island), Kourtney McLain (Pasadena) and assists from Nicole
Gernert (Pasadena) and Lizzy Lombardo (Crofton).
Hoopsmart Basketball WINS:
Hoopsmart's 11U girls basketball team recently competed in the AAU Division II National tournament in New Haven, Conn. Hoopsmart qualified for the tournament by winning the State of Maryland Classics tournament in march.
The 11U team consists of players from Severna Park to Broadneck to Annapolis/Edgewater to Crofton and Millersville. In bracket play, Hoopsmart won a memorable game against the Lower Bucks Lightning as Stephanie Lazo banked in a 24-foot shot at the buzzer for the victory.
Hoopsmart eventually lost to the Rhode Island Cyclones.
Team members include Lazo, Lauren Giblin, Samantha Mocniak, Dallas Jasper, Lizzy Dyson, Emily Gibbons, Alex Morris, Sierra Hicks, Nakyra Hunt, and Calli Yancey.
The team was coached by Bill Giblin, R.T. Yancey and Larry Mocniak.
Meanwhile, the Hoopsmart 14U team is heading to Virginia Beach this weekend for their Nationals tournament. The 14s, coached by Lee Broussard and Lisa Kelly, consist of Kelly Broussard, Molly Ortman, Alexis Keegan, Kailee Knight, Maddie Keating, Nikki Lamond, April Kelly, Kendra Obey, Elle Thibodeau, Carli Studnicky, Allison Martin and Cat Dyson.
