West County: Post 276 fishes for funds with annual fry

The Howard L. Turner American Legion Post 276 will host its 11th annual fish fry from 1 to 6 p.m. Aug. 23, at the post at 8068 Quarterfield Road, Severn.
This annual local favorite features all-you-can-eat fish, hot dogs, hamburgers and hush puppies, draft beer and sodas along with live music, games, horseshoes, a Big 6 wheel, door prizes, raffles and much more.

The cost is $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 12 or younger.

Attendees are encouraged to join in the fun and take their own special side dish to share, providing an opportunity show off that special family recipe.

This year tickets are being sold in advance. There will be no reserved seating.

Fall sports sign-up

The Jessup Provinces Youth Organization is accepting online applications for its fall soccer program.

There will be an in-house program for ages 4 to 7 and a county-level program for ages 8 and older.

The fee is $50 for one player, $80 for two and $100 for three or more players per family.

The deadline to register is Aug. 15. Registrations submitted after the deadline will be assessed a $10 late fee per player.

The organization plays all home games at Provinces Park in Severn.

The Severn Seminoles football team has currently suspended its online registration due to some of the weight classes reaching capacity.

Any parents still wishing to register their child should call 410-551-7843 and leave a message including the child's age and weight. The organization will call back about availability.

The Seminoles play home games at Severn-Danza Park.

St. Bernadette news

St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 801 Stevenson Road, Severn recently announced its calendar of upcoming events.

Sing-ups continue until Aug. 17 for the Sept. 10 golf outing with Our Lady of the Fields at Compass Pointe Golf Course. The cost is $105 and includes green fees, cart, breakfast, refreshment cart, lunch and prizes.

A table will be set up in the gallery for sign up after all Masses.

Each year the church collects school supplies for the children of Sarah's House to begin their school year off right. The needed supplies this year are backpacks, calculators, red, blue or black pens, composition books, pocket folders, combination locks, 1-inch flexible binders, red pencils, pencil boxes, loose leaf paper, tissues, and dividers.

There is also an urgent need for new socks and all sizes of sneakers for children. Gift cards from Payless Shoe Source and discount stores are always welcome.

Donations can be left on the designated table in the hallway through Aug. 3.

Summer fun drop-in continues from 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 30 in the parish picnic area. Food including hot dogs, hamburgers and snacks will be available along with games such as volleyball, Frisbee, bocce and more.

The trip to Harrington Casino in Delaware is scheduled for Aug. 21. The cost is $25 per person and is for people 21 or older; a $15 free slot play will be given to those qualified at the casino.

Attendees will gather in the church parking lot by 8 a.m. and return at about 4:30 p.m.

Reservations and payment will be accepted through Aug. 3 in the parish hall after all Masses.

Reservations are being accepted for the Monsignor O'Dwyer Retreat House's third annual slumber party for women, Sept. 6 and 7.

The cost is $250 for two women; or $159 individually. The price includes all activities, goodie bag, massages, yoga, aerobics, wine tasting, slipper parade, all meals and chocolate.

Help for parents

A faith-based workshop for parents of special needs children will be held at 7 p.m. Thursdays at Severn United Methodist Church, 1215 Old Camp Meade Road.

Elks bingo

Glen Burnie Elks Lodge 2266, at the corner of Quarterfield and Stevenson roads in Severn, offers bingo games at 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

Thirty-two games are played with specials and a progressive jackpot.
