Glen Burnie West: GBIA to raffle new car during Big Glen Burnie Carnival

The Glen Burnie Improvement Association is selling advance raffle tickets for its 2008 carnival car raffle.
This year, the association is selling chances to win a 2008 Ford Focus sedan. The automatic transmission, four-door sedan is silver frost in color, has front and side air bags and gets 33 miles per gallon of gasoline.

The winning ticket will be drawn at approximately 11 p.m. on Aug. 2, the last night of the Big Glen Burnie Carnival.

Raffle tickets cost $2 each or $5 for three tickets. Checks made payable to the G.B. Carnival can be presented for tickets purchased prior to July 20.

Tickets also will be sold each night the carnival is open up until the drawing.

This year's carnival will begin July 25 on the carnival grounds behind the improvement association hall, 19 Crain Highway S.E.

Court of Honor

Boy Scout Troop 873 recently held a Court of Honor to award merit badges and advancements in rank.

Eagle Scout Chris Smith earned a bronze palm.

Nicholas Humphrey, Rickie Kennell and Jay Prather advanced to First Class. Nicholas Miller advanced to the rank of Second Class.

Merit badges were awarded to the following scouts: Aaron Broennimann, four badges; Jay Prather, three badges; Brian Shatt, two badges; Brent Behringer, Logan Bryant, Noah Gestiehr, Skyler King, Nicholas Miller, David Moore and Jimmy Shatt, one badge.

The troop meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Ferndale United Methodist Church, 117 Ferndale Road. Boys ages 11 to 17 years old are welcome to join.

Pascal Senior Center

The Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, recently announced its slate of activities planned for July. Here's a sampling of what's to come:

Singer Trudy Marie will perform country music hits at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow . Admission is free.

Mei Yu Green will teach an introduction to spoken Mandarin Chinese class at 9:30 a.m. on Monday and July 14, 21 and 28. Participants can learn Chinese phonetics and tones, the formation and writing of simple Chinese characters and everyday vocabulary. The class will also include information on Chinese culture and history.

The class is free. Participants are encouraged to obtain a copy of the textbook "Ultimate Mandarin Chinese," published by Random House.

Advance registration is requested.

The center will host a pizza and movie night on Tuesday. Pizza will be served at 4:30 p.m. followed by a showing of the comedy movie "Nanny Diaries" at 5:30 p.m.

Pre-registration and payment for the pizza is requested. The cost is $3 in advance, or $4 at the door.

The Single Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Monday.

Bus trip

The Young at Heart Seniors at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church will host a bus trip to Toby's Dinner Theater on July 30 to see the show "All Shook Up."

The musical comedy features the music of Elvis Presley. A buffet luncheon will be served.

Tickets cost $37.50 and include the luncheon, show and bus transportation.

The bus will leave the church parking lot at 10 a.m. The buffet luncheon will be served at 10:45 a.m. followed by the show at noon.

The deadline for reservations is July 20,

Jazzercise classes

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 308 Oak Manor Drive, offers Jazzercise classes July at the church.

The classes are be taught by Donna Kunkel, a certified Jazzercise instructor. Classes are offered at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday and at 9 a.m. every Saturday.

A body sculpting class are offered at 8 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of the month.

Jazzercise workouts are choreographed to music. Each class is approximately 60 to 70 minutes long and includes a warm-up, aerobics, muscle toning, flexibility exercises and a cool-down period.

The body sculpting class is only 45 minutes long. The class features weight training and stretching exercises for the arms, abdominal muscles and legs.

Crop walk

Recruiting is under way for the 2008 North Anne Arundel County Crop Hunger Walk.

This year's event will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 28. Participants will walk from Glen Burnie United Methodist Church to the Pasadena Crossroads Shopping Center and back along the Baltimore-Annapolis Trail Park.

An organizing rally has been planned for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, 5 Second Ave. S.E.

The Crop Walk raises money to fight hunger both locally and around the world. Twenty-five percent of the money raised will go to the North County Emergency Outreach Network. CROP was originally an acronym for the Church Rural Overseas Project that was begun more than 50 years ago after World War II. The project is now run by Church World Service, a non-denominational religious organization, which distributes emergency goods and self-help services to more than 80 countries throughout the world, as well as the United States.

Vacation Bible school

Peace Lutheran Church will offer vacation Bible school from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 14 to 18 at the church, 416 Wellham Ave.

The program is designed for children ages 4 to 10.

This year's theme is "Rainforest Jungle." All of the crafts, activities and even snacks are environmentally friendly.

Instead of a registration fee, the church is requesting that participants take nonperishable food each night they attend. The food will be donated to the North County Emergency Outreach Network.

Children also should take a clean, brightly colored, T-shirt without a pocket on July 14 for a project later in the week.

Bingo games

The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company sponsors bingo games every Wednesday night in the fire hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd.

Games begin at 7:30 p.m. Every week features a $500 jackpot game.

Cheerleading sign-up

The Anne Arundel Gridiron Rebels will accept registration for its cheerleading program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays at the club fieldhouse, located on the athletic fields behind George T. Cromwell Elementary School, 525 Wellham Ave.

The program is open to children ages 4 to 15.

Registration costs $80. Prior cheerleading experience is not required.
