Tennis: Tourney winds down at Truxtun Park

The City of Annapolis Tournament has been in full swing.
Play began at Truxtun Park two weeks ago, and there have been several spirited matches. Mike Cordas (Crofton) overcame Dan Dupras (Glen Burnie), 4-6, 7-6(8), 7-6 (8) in Men's NTRP 3.5 Singles; Juan Castillo defeated Stephen Woody, 6-7; 7-6(5), 6-0, 6-4, in the Men's NTRP 4.0 Singles; and Michael Davis and Ann Traxler (Davidsonville) defeated Aaron and Nannette Littlejohn (Severna Park), 4-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(7).

Junior Team Tennis: The Annapolis Area Tennis School and the Anne Arundel County Tennis Association will kick off USTA Junior Team Tennis League this summer. This program emphasizes fun, teamwork and friendly competition. Every team member will be able to play.

Randy Stevens has organized three teams in the 18 and Under Intermediate League in Annapolis, Broadneck and Severna Park. Beverly Schwink coaches the Annapolis Team, Stevens coaches the Broadneck team and Grant Yinger and Mike Ashmead coach the Severna Park team.

In the 14 and Under Intermediate League, Russell Fink has organized three teams with two in Annapolis and one in Severna Park. Robert Brown and Barry Hill coach the Annapolis teams, and Chris Hart-Moynihan coaches the Severna Park team. Both leagues will complete match play in time for the league champion to enter the state playoffs in Columbia on July 11.

Neighborhood Tennis: The AACO Recreation and Parks Office just started the first summer session for adults last week. Neighborhood Tennis meets one day a week at various locations around the county, including Annapolis High School and the Community College. This is a great way to get into shape or to get back into the game of tennis. The Annapolis Area Tennis School provides helpful instruction so players quickly get into recreational matches. Big VanillA: Tennis Director Bill Moldoch is beginning his summer camp schedule this week for Juniors (8-16) and Pee Wees (5-7). Moldoch is ranked No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Men's 55+ Singles and is nationally ranked as well. He has organized his camps in small groups to emphasize fun, good sportsmanship and sound fundamentals. Players are grouped by experience and age. Weekly sessions run from June 16 to Aug. 15. The Pee Wee Program teaches the basics of tennis through games and activities. Campers are encouraged to feel a sense of accomplishment as they improve their hand-eye coordination.

Tournament News: Richard Sieber (Harwood) won the title in the Men's 45s at the Annual Shiloh Open and DC NTRP Championships in Washington D.C. from June 5-8. He defeated Ronnie Goodall (Washington), 6-3, 6-2. Olivia Gaudreault (Annapolis) won the Girls' 16 Singles at the Potomac Junior Open No. 6 L5 from June 6-8. She defeated Nicole Gottret, 6-3, 6-3.

Patrick Daciek (Severna Park) advanced to the semifinals of the Men's Open Singles at the Greater Baltimore Men's Open Singles Championship where he fell to Jared Pinsky (Potomac), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Pinsky and Daciek will surely face each other again in the ACC, since Jared is en route to Duke and Patrick is going to Virginia Tech.

Bill Moldoch (Severna Park) advanced to the semifinals of the Men's 45 Singles at the USTA/MAS Men's 45 Outdoor Clay Court Championships in Rockville from June 4-9. He fell to Chris Reynard Sr. (2).
