Glen Burnie West; BWMC offers Camp Airways for its 20th year

Kids can learn how to live with and manage their asthma while meeting other children with asthma when Baltimore Washington Medical Center sponsors its 20th annual Camp Airways for children with asthma from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 4 through 8 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park.
Participation is open to children ages 6 to 12 with asthma. Camp activities include arts and crafts, asthma and nutrition education, swimming and other outdoor activities.

The cost of the camp is $70.

The hospital is also seeking junior counselors to serve as mentors or camp buddies for two assigned campers and to assist with daily activities. Junior counselors must be ages 15 and older and able to attend the camp from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Participants must provide their own transportation.

Swim lessons

The Glen Burnie Park Swim Club will offer another series of swim lessons at its community pool, 500 Everett Road.

Beginner classes will be held from 10:30 to 11 am. Monday through Thursday beginning Monday through July 10. An advanced beginner class will be held from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on the same dates. In the event of rain, classes will be made up on Fridays.

Evening swim lessons also will be available from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday nights for beginner swimmers and from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for advanced beginners. Evening classes will run from Tuesday through July 18.

Each session consists of eight half-hour lessons. The cost is $60 for members, $65 for nonmembers.

Another round of morning classes will be scheduled July 14 through July 24.

Pascal Senior Center

The Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, will offer fun and fitness for its members and visitors next week.

The musical "All Aboard" will be presented by Thirst 'n' Howl Musical Productions at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The duo of Debi Wynn and Ellis Woodward will take participants on a trip through Maryland's history to the beginning of the B&O Railroad. The hourlong show includes original music as well as traditional railroad songs. Admission is free and open to the public. Center members are encouraged to take their grandchildren to the show.

Joanne Dewilde will teach a belly dancing workshop at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and July 15. The free class is designed to promote flexibility and exercise while having fun.

Seniors will play Bunco at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and July 15. Those who would like to learn how to play the popular parlor game should sign up in the center office.

Fitness instructor Louise Mulvey will be available by appointment to help center members develop a custom fitness program. The exercise program will be based on the participant's general health and answers to a questionnaire. All seniors should get their doctor's permission before starting a new exercise program.

Senior information specialist Wanda Swift will meet with seniors by appointment on Tuesday to help them identify their needs, locate services and complete applications for assistance.

Trivia contest

Ravens Nest 10 will sponsor its monthly sports trivia contest at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Fireside Inn, 7400 Ritchie Highway.

There is no entry fee. Cash prizes of $75, $50 and $25 will be awarded to the first, second and first place winners respectively.

Camp Kidgits

Local youth are invited to participate this summer in Camp Kidgits at Marley Station mall, 7900 Ritchie Highway. The free summer program will run through July 25.

This week's activities include "Fun with Kung Fu" and an origami activity from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the center court.

Free family movies will be shown at the Regal Cinema at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Children are invited to exercise at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gold's Gym. This week's program is "Dance Party Fitness."

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for all activities. Membership for the Kidgits club costs $5, is good for one year and includes a membership card and a free T-shirt.

Food and fundraising

The Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department will benefit from a lunch and dinner fundraiser Wednesday at the Cactus Willies restaurant, 7315 Ritchie Highway.

Participants must mention the group when they pay so the volunteers can receive 15 percent of the sale.

The Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 159 will meet Monday night at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 7606 Quarterfield Road. Weigh-in starts at 6:30 p.m. followed by a membership meeting at 7:30 p.m.

The group meets Monday nights to talk about weight loss.

The Christian Science Society, 101 First Ave. S.E., will host a one-hour service for spiritual health and healing at 5 p.m. tomorrow and at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
