Family affair aboard Mirage

Fredrik Salvesen and Cedric Lewis have been racing sailboats together since they were classmates at St. Mary's High.
In those days, the two friends competed in the Annapolis Yacht Club Wednesday Night Series aboard Mirage - a J/29 owned by Dave Lewis, Cedric's father. Some 26 years later, Salvesen and Cedric Lewis co-own a J/105 named Mirage and now their own children come out sailing on Wednesday nights.

"We have always been a family-based boat, especially on Wednesday night. We have a policy that any kid that shows up is automatically on the boat," Salvesen said.

Eight-year-old Nicholas Salvesen was aboard for all but one race during the Series 1 of Wednesday Night racing. The father can only hope his son enjoys the experience as much as he did as a boy.

"I love that Nick comes out with us. He might be swinging from a rail down in the cabin, but at least he's on the boat and soaking up the experience," Fredrik said.

The Mirage team ended a rare drought by winning J/105 class for Series 1, posting a pair of bullets and a second in three of the four races that counted. It was the first series victory in more than a year for the Salvesen-Lewis syndicate, which is blessed with a remarkably stable crew. Pat Donnelly, Jeannie McCutchan, Molly Hughes-Wilmer, Greg Larcher and Vernon Sheen have been with the boat for years.

"We are very fortunate to have a group of people who know the boat that we can count on week in and week out. That really helps on Wednesday night," said Salvesen, who often has renowned professional Terry Hutchinson aboard as tactician.

Series 1 concluded on June 18 with most of the classes completing five races. A dying breeze prevented the Alberg 30, J/105, J/30, and PHRF B classes from completing Race 4 before the time limit.

North Sails professional Allan Terhune put forth a command performance in topping the talent-laden Etchells fleet, winning all four races that counted. Katie Terhune worked the bow for her husband while Jason Werner handled the middle.

"We've just been lucky so far," said Terhune, who admitted that colleague Jonathan Bartlett skippered the boat one Wednesday night and posted the team's largest margin of victory.

Terhune is known mostly as a Lightning competitor, but is trying to be more active in the Etchells class in order to interact with customers and prepare for the North American Championship that is being held this September in Annapolis. Despite the steady string of bullets, he said the competition each week with the likes of Edward Holt, Matt Schubert and Jose Fuentes has been intense.

"There are a lot of really good sailors out there every Wednesday night," Terhune said.

Well-known local attorney Gill Cochran posted an equally impressive effort in Herreshoff class, winning all four races that counted and finishing seven points ahead of runner-up William Brinsfield.

Competition was particularly close in the Alberg 30 class during Series 1 with Ralph Bluntschli sailing Second-2-Nun to a one-point victory over Virginia Nurco and LinGin.

Jim Allsop skippered Moxie to straight bullets in Mumm 30 class while David Askew steered his new J/122 Flying Jenny IV to victory in three of four starts in PHRF A1.

Rod Jabin and the Ramrod crew won a tiebreaker with Charles Engh and Stray Dog in PHRF A0 while Robert Awalt and the Greyhound team did the same in A2 against George Hichens and Yankee Zulu.
