Golf tournament
Registration has opened for the 2008 Anne Arundel County Open three-day stroke play tournament from July 18 to July 20 at two county golf courses.

The qualifying round will take place 2 p.m. July 18 at Compass Pointe Northeast Golf Course, 9010 Fort Smallwood Road in Pasadena. The second round will be held 8:30 a.m. July 19 at Eisenhower Golf Course, 1576 Generals Highway in Crownsville.

The final round takes place 8:30 a.m. July 20 at Compass Pointe Northeast Golf Course.

All rounds feature a shotgun start and the weekend includes food and beverages, draft beer, a tournament kit, prizes and party.

The cost is $195 per player, and ladies and senior citizens are welcome. For more information, call 410-571-1167.

The New Valley Four

The Brooklyn Park United Brethren in Christ Church, 201 W. Hilltop Road, will host a concert featuring The New Valley Four at 10:30 a.m. on July 13.

The quartet consists of Richard Delawder as lead singer, Tim Kesner as tenor, Stacy Meyerhoeffer as baritone and Ray Propst as bass.

Good, clean fun

It's vacation Bible school season, which means area churches have planned a week's worth of children's Bible studies filled with food, crafts and fun. Here are a few offerings in the weeks ahead.

Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church, 921 Generals Highway, will hold VBS from 9 a.m. to noon July 7 to 11. The program is open to children ages 3 through sixth-grade.

Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 110 Ritchie Highway, will hold VBS from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. July 7 to 11. The program is open to children entering kindergarten through fifth-grade. The cost is $5, with a $15 per family maximum.

The kick-off service will be held at 7 p.m. July 6. The church will be resemble a busy city of Jerusalem in Bible days. Children will learn to use their senses to see what life was like in biblical times. Registrations are available online or by contacting the church office.

Oakwood Wesleyan Church, 505 Oakwood Station Road, will offer a science-themed VBS from 9 a.m. to noon July 7 through 11 at the church. During "Power Lab," children will have fun making discoveries and learning about Jesus' miracles. The program is free and includes games, treats, music, videos, stories and crafts.

Teenagers and adult volunteers are needed to help with the program.

Kids ages 4 to those who have completed grade six are invited to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 7859 Tick Neck Road in Pasadena, to hear stories about Jesus, make crafts, play games, eat snacks, sing songs of worship and make new friends. With the theme of 'Rainforest Adventure,' the program will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 14 to 18 and costs $5 for the week.

Salad days

Be a hit at the next cookout and healthy, too, by taking the Bistro-style Salads adult cooking class from the county Recreation and Parks Department from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 22 at Meade Middle School, 1103 26th St., Fort Meade.

People 18 and older can learn how to make the classic French salad Nicoise, goat cheese on a bed of field greens and Greek cucumber salad. The fee is $45, which includes all materials.
