Glen Burnie West: Parade marks early start to Memorial Day tributes

The Glen Burnie Improvement Association will present the 21st annual Glen Burnie Memorial Day parade at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The winner of the 2008 Richard Carter Memorial Award will ride in a place of honor in the parade. Other parade participants include local high school marching bands, fire departments, veterans' organizations, pom squads, antique cars, scout troops and civic clubs.

The entire parade will form in the parking lot of Corkran Middle School, 7600 Quarterfield Road. Parade participants are encouraged to park their vehicles in the Glen Burnie parking garage on Post 40 Road where the parade will disband. There will be no parking available for participants at the school.

This year, the parade will leave the school grounds to travel east on Quarterfield Road to Crain Highway, then travel north on Crain Highway past the reviewing stand at the GBIA hall at 19 Crain Highway, S.E. It will turn right onto Post 40 Road where they will disband on the GBIA carnival grounds.

Awards will be given in a variety of categories to parade participants. A $500 cash prize will be awarded to the organization whose parade entry best describes the meaning of Memorial Day.

Belated Mother's Day

Glen Burnie United Methodist Church will host a Mother's Day celebration from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the church fellowship hall, 5 Second Ave. S.E.

Admission is $7 for anyone ages 11 and older. Admission is $3 for children ages 2 to 10. Children younger than age 2 will be admitted for free.

The event will include brunch, a puppet show by the Victory Puppet Corps and a magic show by Bill and Susan Moore.

Proceeds will be used for the Volunteers in Mission project.

District 32 meeting

The District 32 Democratic Club will meet tomorrow night at the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd.

Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. A business meeting will follow at 8 p.m. The cost of the meal is $6.

Sen. James "Ed" DeGrange Sr., D-Glen Burnie will be the guest speaker. He will talk about the 2008 General Assembly session.

Basket bingo

The Anne Arundel Alarmers will sponsor a basket bingo Sunday at the Orchard Beach Volunteer Fire Department hall, 7549 Solley Road.

The doors will open at 1 p.m. for seating. Bingo games will begin at 2 p.m.

Admission is $15 in advance, or $18 at the door.

The event includes 20 regular games, in addition to special games and raffles. Door prizes will be awarded.

All bingo and raffle prizes will be filled Longaberger baskets.

Food and refreshments will be sold.

Golf tournament

Ravens Roost 18 will sponsor a charity golf tournament on Monday at the Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with coffee and cake. The cost to participate is $100 per person, $400 per team, or $450 for a team and a tee sponsor. The entrance fee includes green and cart fees, a closest-to-the-pin competition, hole-in-one package, door prizes, longest drive competition and prizes for the first-, second- and third- place golfers.

There also will be a 50-50 raffle and mulligans for sale. All proceeds will be donated to county schools and local sports organizations.

Carry-out dinner

Ferndale United Methodist Church will sponsor a carry-out dinner from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Sunday in the its fellowship hall, 117 Ferndale Road.

The menu includes roasted chicken, scalloped potatoes, vegetable, salad, roll, butter and dessert. The cost is $7.

Amateur radio

The Anne Arundel Amateur Radio Emergency Services/Radio Amateur Communication Emergency Services will hold their monthly meeting from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the county Emergency Operations Center, in the Henry Hein Public Safety Building, 7480 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd.

Free parking is available in the county parking garage.

ARES/RACES meets on the third Saturday of each month at the EOC to train emergency communications operators and conduct planning.

New members are welcome. There are no membership fees.

The association offers testing for the amateur radio licenses at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The test is free.

Babysitting training

The Baltimore Wasington Medical Center will offer a Safe Sitter babysitting training class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, located on the third floor of the hospital, 301 Hospital Drive.

The class is designed for pre-teens ages 11 to 13. The training will cover both emergency and non-emergency situations, including child care basics, choking child and infant rescue, preventing problem behavior, first aid and injury management.

Advance registration is required. Tuition costs $50. Class size is limited.

Participants should take a bagged lunch.

CASOS store

The Community Advocates for Senior Opportunities and Services Inc. operates a craft and consignment store on the first floor of the Anne Arundel Community College in the Glen Burnie Town Center, 101 Crain Highway N.E.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Consignment items are accepted from seniors from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All of the craft items sold in the store have been handmade by seniors from throughout the county. Twenty percent of the profits fund a senior emergency and crisis intervention fund.

Quarter auction

A quarter auction will be held Friday at the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd. The doors will open at 6 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Little Sisters of the Poor. In addition, canned goods and other non-perishable food items will be collected for the North County Emergency Outreach Network.

Admission is $3. Anyone who takes two friends is admitted for free. Those who take five friends will be entered into a special drawing to play for free. Extra auction paddles cost $2.

Food items will be sold.

Pampered Chef, Home Interiors, PurseSnickety, Arbonne, Avon, Cookie Lee, Creative Memories, Party Lites, DK Designs, and Tastefully Simple consultants will provide gifts valued between $10 and $100. Each item is placed in a bidding category based on its value. Participants bid from one to four quarters on a prize, depending on its value. Winners are drawn randomly from the pool of bidders. It would cost approximately $40 in quarters to bid on every prize.

Door prizes will be awarded and there will be raffle drawings for two baskets and a 50-50 drawing..

Safari slide show

Center member and computer instructor Bill Chavanne will share his photos from a recent African safari at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road.

Also happening at the center:

A registered nurse will check glucose levels of diabetic patients from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow and Friday. Blood pressures also will be checked.

Senior information specialist Wanda Swift will meet with seniors by appointment tomorrow and Tuesday. Mrs. Swift will help seniors to identify needs, locate services and complete applications for services.

The center's Advisory Council will meet at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The Pascal Seniors Inc. will meet at 10:15 p.m. tomorrow.

The center will host a patio party from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday. Music will be played by Bob Lee. Light refreshments will be served.

In the event of inclement weather, the party will be moved indoors.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 434 and its Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Ferndale Senior Center, 7205 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd.

Memories of Elvis

Elvis impersonator Michael Hoover will perform in a benefit "Memories of Elvis" show at 4 p.m. Sunday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 160 hall, 2597 Dorsey Road.

The doors will open at 3:30 p.m. for seating.

Tickets cost $15 and include chips, pretzels and sodas.

The event also will include door prizes and raffles.

All proceeds will benefit Bello Machre, a residential housing and support services program for developmentally disabled individuals.

Spring concert

Students at Monsignor Slade Regional Catholic School will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the school auditorium, 120 Dorsey Road.

The school's flutophone class, beginning band, prep band, concert band and symphonic band will perform under the direction of band director Wes Osment.

Open house

The Baltimore Washington Medical Center will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Tate Cancer Center's Image Recovery Center, 305 Hospital Drive.

Participants will be able to preview the new spring and summer collections as well as sample products. Information will be available on the Image Recovery Center's expanded services.

Stationary created by a local artist will be displayed.

Refreshments will be served. Door prizes will be awarded.

Kid chefs at mall

Marley Station mall is inviting young chefs to participate in the Simon Kidgits Super Duper Mini Chefs event from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the center court of the mall at 7900 Ritchie Highway.

Children will have the opportunity to make a pasta creation. Other activities include a Mr. Potato Head mix and match, a pretzel rolling contest, face painting and balloon sculpting.

Children ages 6 to 12 are also encouraged to enter a recipe contest that is co-sponsored by the mall and radio station Mix 106.5. Recipe contest categories are desserts, entrees, side dishes and appetizers. Recipes can be entered online at the radio station's Web site or dropped off at guest services at the mall. The grand prize winner will receive a one-week class with the "For the Love of Food" summer program.

All Simon Kidgit members will receive a free fruit and vegetable play set and kids place mat while supplies last.

Nonperishable food items will be collected for the North County Emergency Outreach Network at the event.

Swim team sign-up

The Glen Burnie Park Swim Club will accept registration for its Dolphin swim team from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the pool's spring clean up at 500 Everett Road.

Swim team participants must be ages 6 to 18. Dues cost $65 for the first child, $30 for the second child and $25 for each additional child in the family.

The swim team will begin practicing on May 27.

New members are welcome, however swim team member's families must be members of the pool. Family pool memberships are available. The cost is $385 for the first two members and an additional $25 for each child ages 2 to 10. There is also a one-time only initiation fee of $100.
