Severna Park resident lands first head position
Bill Rosemond was formally introduced yesterday as the varsity girls basketball coach at Archbishop Spalding High School.

Rosemond replaces Deb Taylor, who coached the Cavaliers for the last 12 seasons.

A Severna Park resident, Rosemond most recently was an assistant coach for the varsity team at Severna Park High School in 2006. He was also the junior varsity head coach for the Falcons in 2003 and 2004.

He has been a coach with the Maryland Hurricanes AAU organization for the past five years.

Though Rosemond does not have a high school head coaching pedigree, Spalding athletic director Lee Dove is confident in his latest hire.

"We've been fortunate to have brought in coaches that haven't been head coaches and have turned into diamonds in the rough," Dove said. "He's got a real sense of enthusiasm to prove himself and to assume a leadership position and apply the knowledge he has."

Dove also said that Rosemond's familiarity with the area and some of the players at Spalding weighed into his to decision to hire him.

"I just felt that he would be the change to pick up the reins and continue to move us forward," Dove said.

Rosemond, 45, is a local product. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1980, and he received a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Maryland in 1985.

"I don't think there's a better academic institution (than Spalding) in the county," Rosemond said. "And to play in the best conference against the best teams night in and night out, it's a wonderful opportunity for me. I'm really excited, and I'm grateful for Spalding for putting their faith in me."

Another tie Rosemond has to the Spalding program is that he coached former Cavaliers star Whitney Snoops, now a forward at McDaniel College, when she played with the Hurricanes.

"The committee that met with him liked what he had to say and how he thinks he can prepare our girls to be successful in the IAAM," Dove said. "He said a good goal for him would be to play on that final Sunday of the season. That may be a lofty goal for a first-year coach, but I have a lot of respect for him to say that."
