Intense rivalries usually bring out the best in both teams, especially when it takes place in the playoffs.
St. Mary's and Severn did not disappoint last night, needing overtime to decide who would advance in their IAAM A Conference quarterfinal matchup.

Both teams fought back and forth before Severn came out on top in the extra period, defeating the Saints, 11-9.

Severn will go on to play the winner of the Bryn Mawr- McDonogh game on Thursday night.

In overtime, Monica D'Ambrogi completed a hat trick, giving Severn what proved to be the winning goal one minute into period. The Saints had a chance late in the game, but Severn goalie Hannah Hook stepped up, denying junior Joanna Dalton with an excellent save.

"Hannah Hook got the call in goal today and really played well under pressure for us," said Severn coach Renie Sotiropoulos. "She played exactly like what we were hoping for."

Each team played tight defense early on before Dalton put the Saints ahead, 1-0, eight minutes into the game. Severn quickly responded with a goal from senior Alex Priddy - the first of two to begin a 5-0 run over the next eight minutes for the Admirals.

The Saints made adjustments, coming and put together some nice attacking play. Dalton quickly got her team back in it, scoring her second goal just a few minutes later.

"St. Mary's is very well coached," Sotiropoulos said. "(St. Mary's coach Sue Chittim) made some adjustments she should have made and got some goals back. Their team plays very much like a team. It was a back-and-forth game of adjustments".

The second half opened up for both teams, with more shots and quick possessions on both sides. However, the goalies were the real story, stopping multiple one-on-one opportunities off restarts and doing a nice job of clearing the ball.

Hook shook off two quick goals and came up with some key stops to make sure her team wouldn't go away quietly.

After some back and forth play continued through the second half, Fox once again came up big for the Saints, scoring her third of the day with three minutes to play. Owen wasn't going to let her team go down without a fight. The midfielder scored the tying goal a minute and a half to play in regulation.
