Monday Softball: Nescio strikes out 18 in Spalding triumph

Junior Elaine Nescio struck out 18 to notch her fifth shutout of the season for No. 3 Spalding, as the Cavaliers defeated Howard, 1-0, in a tuneup for this week's IAAM A Conference softball tournament.
Nescio scattered three hits for Spalding, which received two hits each from juniors Andrea Catucci and Jennifer Rindone.

Rindone and senior Delaney Bell each belted doubles with Bell's hit scoring Catucci in the bottom of the third.

BROADNECK 9, SEVERNA PARK 0: Sophomore Ashley Thomas tripled, homered and drove in five runs, and senior Corie Sietler doubled, tripled and drove in two runs. Broadneck junior Avery Gabbard added two hits and an RBI. Kourtney Salvarola picked up the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits and striking out 10. Senior Jen Haag had a double and a triple for the Falcons.

ANNAPOLIS 17, SOUTHERN 0: Senior Erin Delaney had three hits, including a double and a home run, and she drove in three runs for the host Panthers.

Senior Brianna Davis went 4-for-4 with four RBIs for Annapolis, which pounded out 17 hits.

Junior Jessica Boucek tripled, homered and drove in four runs, and junior Virginia Finch went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Katie Sears had two hits. Boucek allowed just one hit while recording her fourth win on the mound..

Senior Erica Richards went 3-for-3 for the Gophers, while senior Erica Kinney had a triple.

NORTH COUNTY 14, MEADE 4: Senior Theresa Papsan went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and junior Hailie Hopla added a double and two RBIs as the Knights used an eight-run fourth inning to put away what had been a close game.

Junior Ashley Heyliger drove in two runs for North County.

ARUNDEL 13, SOUTH RIVER 5: Rachael Levy went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the fifth-ranked Wildcats.

Angel Palmieri and Amanda Hedgepeth had two hits apiece for Arundel, which plated 11 runs in the first four innings and belted 14 hits. Kayla Martinez picked up the win.

NORTHEAST 5, OLD MILL 2: Junior pitcher Heather Brown notched 14 strikeouts en route to her 14th victory. Brown finished the regular season with 204 strikeouts.

"Heather puts us in a position to win every time she goes out there," Northeast coach Kenny Miller said of his ace.

Bethany Harrington provided most of the offense for Northeast, going 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.

Senior shortstop Amy Baker had a big diving catch.
