The Anne Arundell County Historical Society will sponsor its annual spring book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Glen Burnie Improvement Association hall, 19 Crain Highway S.E.
Used books will be sold for inexpensive prices. The books will be sorted by subject categories for easy browsing.
In addition, a limited number of older, rare books will be available for sale in the basement of the Kuethe Library, 5 Crain Highway.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the Historical and Genealogical Research Center operated by the historical society and the Anne Arundel County Genealogical Society.

Jazzercise offer
New participants are welcome to attend a week of Jazzercise classes for free during the open house through May 15 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 308 Oak Manor Drive.
Anyone who signs up for classes during the open house will receive a $20 gift card.

CASOS luncheon
The Community Advocates for Senior Opportunities and Services will host its 39th anniversary Salute to Seniors luncheon at noon May 13 at LaFontaine Bleue, 7514 Ritchie Highway.

De-stressing women
The Baltimore Washington Medical Center will host a motivational speaker at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the hospital, 301 Hospital Drive.
The speaker, Kim Goad, will present a program "Go From Overwhelmed to Overjoyed". The talk will focus on ways women can go from stressful to stress-free lives. Light refreshments will be served.
Admission is free, however participants are asked to take a new, unwrapped baby item for the hospital's Stork Nest program.

Depression, bipolar
Holy Trinity Catholic Church will sponsor a new support group for people with depression or bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, from 7 to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Friday nights of each month in the annex room of the Parish Center, 126 Dorsey Road. The first meeting will be held May 22.
The group will be a local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, one of over 400 throughout the country. It will be open to anyone diagnosed with a mood disorder, or anyone who has a friend or family member who is diagnosed or who thinks they may have depression.
The group is not run by a professional. It will offer peer to peer confidential support.

Smoking cessation
The Baltimore Washington Medical Center will offer a seven-week "Freedom from Smoking" class beginning Wednesday night in the first floor conference room of the Tate Cancer Center, 305 Hospital Drive.
Class size is limited; advance registration is required.
The program will be taught by a Courtnee Tate a certified Freedom from Smoking facilitator. Nurse practitioner Debbie VanOrden will assist participants with their needs for nicotine replacement medications.
Participants will learn about the health benefits of living smoke free, the barriers to quitting smoking, nicotine replacement options, motivational exercises and stress management tips.
The program is free to those who live or work in the County. Free nicotine gum, patches or Chantix will also be available to smokers who participate in all of the classes.

Quarter auction
A quarter auction will be held Monday at the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company Hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd., to benefit a charity.
Admission is $3. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.; the auction game will begin at 7 p.m.
Food items will be sold.
Ten different direct sales consultants have provided gifts valued between $10 and $100. Each participant will receive a bidding paddle with a number when they arrive. Participants can choose which prizes they want to bid on. After the bidding is closed, the auctioneer pulls winning numbers.

Seniors are invited to watch "P.S. I Love You," a movie about a grieving widow who finds that her husband left her a series of monthly messages to help ease her transition into widowhood.
The movie will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday following a pizza dinner at 4:30 p.m. Admission to the movie is free; the pizza dinner costs $3 in advance or $4 at the door.
Center members will host a garden tea at 1 p.m. Wednesday . The tea is limited to senior center members. Advance reservations are required due to limited space.
The cost is $3, which includes tea, light refreshments and dessert. Each table will seat four people. The group of four should choose a hostess who will provide a tea pot set and table decorations. Centerpieces will be provided.

The Glen Burnie Lions Club will host a bus trip to the Philadelphia Park casino in Pennsylvania on May 31.

Exercise classes
The Baltimore Washington Medical Center, 301 Hospital Drive will offer a new session of Pilates, yoga and a combination Pilates and yoga class beginning May 12. The classes will be taught by certified instructors. Each class is limited to 20 students.
The eight-week sessions cost $40. Payment will be accepted by cash or credit card. Advance registration is required.
Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothes and take their own exercise mat. Prior experience is not required.

Cheer registration

Peace Lutheran Church, 416 Wellham Ave., will host a "Help Whip Cancer" Pampered Chef fundraiser at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
Twenty percent of the proceeds will go directly to the local Breast Cancer Foundation. Pampered Chef has designed many new products with the pink breast cancer logo on them. In addition, there will be a 50-50 raffle and $100 worth of door prizes.

Master Club
Boys and girls are invited to attend the Master Club meeting at Fellowship Baptist Church from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday nights at the church, 1015 Sundown Road. The program is for children 4-years-old through the sixth grade.
The program includes games, achievement awards, singing, competitions, Bible stories and other fun activities. Participants can earn more than 60 badges. All children are welcome, regardless of their religious affiliation.

The Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor bingo games every Thursday night in May at the Glen Burnie Improvement Association hall, 19 Crain Highway S.E.
The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for seating. Early bird games begin at 7:15 p.m. and will be immediately followed by regular games.
Three admission packages will be offered. The cost is $11, $14 or $18. In addition, instant tear-off card games and special game cards will be sold. There also is a $500 progressive jackpot game. Door prizes are awarded each week.
Food including sandwiches, hot dogs, baked goods and drinks will be sold from 6:30 to approximately 9:15 p.m.
There will be a 15-minute intermission break for those who wish to smoke outside the building. Parking is located behind the building.
The fire department uses the weekly fundraiser for new equipment and to pay monthly operating expenses.
