State police said this week they misidentified one of the drivers in the April 25 fiery three-car pile up on Route 10 that killed a Glen Burnie man.
Bobbi L. Steiner, 25, of Baltimore was driving the Ford Contour that stopped suddenly on the highway near the Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard exit, causing a Cadillac Escalade driven by Joseph D. Norfolk, 23, to slam into the back of it.
A Ford flatbed truck driven by Jason R. Fisher, 40, of Gaithersburg then hit the back of Mr. Norfolk's SUV, causing its fuel tank to rupture. A blaze immediately engulfed the Cadillac and killed Mr. Norfolk.
Police originally said Jason J. Wise, 24, who lives with Ms. Steiner, was driving the Contour. Investigators are looking into reports from witnesses that Mr. Wise and Mr. Norfolk got into a fight before the accident, and trying to figure out why Ms. Steiner stopped the car.
"There may have been some type of altercation," said Sgt. Arthur Betts, spokesman for the state police's Pikesville headquarters. "Investigators are trying to find out whether the drivers of the Ford and the Cadillac knew each other before the crash."
He said when officers arrived on the scene, witnesses told them a male was driving the Contour. Later on, follow-up interviews revealed it was actually Ms. Steiner behind the wheel. They also corrected their address, saying they no longer lived in Harundale.
Sgt. Betts said he couldn't comment when or if charges would be filed, but the investigation is expected to take a few more weeks.
Family members held a memorial service yesterday for Mr. Norfolk, who worked for his uncle's landscaping business and had a young daughter, Kaylee.
Mr. Norfolk was alone in the car when the accident happened. Mr. Wise and Ms. Steiner were riding in the Contour with a 4-month-old child, Jeremiah Wise.
Those three were taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor injuries and later released. Mr. Fisher, the driver of the Ford truck, wasn't injured. His two passengers were taken to area hospitals and treated and released.
The two men went to Glen Burnie High together and never got along, Harundale residents said this week.
Both have records for brushes with the law.
According to court records, Mr. Wise was arrested in November for allegedly getting into a fight with Ms. Steiner and then waving a gun at two of her family members. That case is still pending.
In 2005, he pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree assault for stabbing two men during an altercation in Ferndale.
There is no court record indicating Mr. Norfolk and Mr. Wise ever were charged with fighting each other, though Mr. Norfolk pleaded guilty in 2005 to malicious destruction of property for smashing in the windshield of his girlfriend's car. Ms. Steiner has no criminal record.
Efforts by the Maryland Gazette to reach Mr. Wise, Ms. Steiner and the family of Mr. Norfolk were not successful this week.
Witnesses with information regarding the crash are asked to call the Glen Burnie state police barracks at 410-761-5130.
