Olde Mill-Millersville: Summer camps offer wide variety

The county Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registrations for the following camps held Mondays through Fridays.
A state-licensed summer school age child care program will be offered from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 23 to Aug. 8 at South Shore Elementary School, 1376 Fairfield Loop Road.

The program is open to students who will have completed grades kindergarten through fifth-grade in June. The cost is $145 per week.

Children must have state-mandated forms completed and on file at the summer site prior to their first day of attendance. Required forms are available at the departments's Web site or by calling the Child Care office at 410-222-7856.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will end once the school has reached its maximum registration level.

Activities will include sports, games, field trips, arts and crafts, and two healthy snacks. Students must take their own lunch. The program will provide a lunch beverage.

A Summer Fun Center will be offered from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning June 23 through Aug. 1 at Shipley's Choice Elementary School, 310 Governor Stone Parkway.

Students entering grades one through six are eligible to participate.

The cost is $300 per week. Discounts are offered for families with multiple children attending.

There will be six weekly sessions of the "Teens on the Go" camp for students entering seventh through 10th grades scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning June 23 at Kinder Farm Park, 1001 Kinder Farm Park Road.

Each week teens will travel around the county participating in activities such as skating, golfing, swimming and bowling. A different amusement park trip is planned for each week to various places including Six Flags, Kings Dominion, Ocean City and Hershey Park.

The cost is $195 per five day session or $1160 for all six sessions. The camp fee for the second week is discounted by $10 due to a four-day session during the Fourth of July holiday week.

Two one week sessions of the Wilderness Challenge Camp for students ages 9 to 13 will be held at Kinder Farm Park.

Sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 16 through 20 and Aug. 4 through 8. For five days campers will experience the adventures of rock climbing, fishing, kayaking and white water rafting. There will be one extended day per week in which parents must pick up students at 6 p.m. The cost is $375 per session.

Three different Mad Science Camp sessions with various themes and hands-on activities will be held at Shipley's Choice Elementary School. Session one, "Movin' and Groovin' with Science," will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 14 to 18 for students in grades second through fifth. Students will investigate arches, egg shapes, geodesic domes and explore the world of science investigation. The cost is $260.

Session two, the "World Around Us," will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 21 through 25 for kids ages 3 to 4. Campers will investigate their bones and senses. The cost is $155.

Session three, "Ooey, Gooey, Yummy," will be held from noon to 3 p.m. July 21 through 25 for students in kindergarten to second grade. An investigation into the senses will include hair raising experiences and slime making activities. The cost is $155.

Three different computer camps will be offered with various activities at Shipley's Choice Elementary School. Each session is $185.

Session one, "About Our World: People and Places," will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. July 28 through Aug. 1 Students ages 4 to 6 will take virtual tour of six continents to view its countries, customs and languages. Daily projects of what is discovered will be created.

Session two, "Technology Mania," will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 4 through 8. Students ages 6 to 9 will receive an introduction to the digital world with the use of cameras, microscopes and robots.

Session three, "Clay and Animation," will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 4 through 8. Students ages 6 to 9 will create their own clay animation movie. The camp will use age appropriate software to allow students to create a movie CD.

Students ages 7 to 10 are invited to participate in the Dino Dig camp schedule for 9 a.m. to noon beginning July 28 at Shipley's Choice Elementary School.

The one week session will show campers techniques used to extract fossils. Students will participate in a hands-on activity with a fossil dig and creation of a 3-D skeleton research and presentation. The cost is $185.

Advanced registration with program fee is required for all camps. Parents may register their children online at www.aacounty.org/recparks or by completing a registration form at the headquarters office, 1 Harry S. Truman Parkway in Annapolis.

Millersville 55 +

Members of the Millersville 55 + Club will meet for bridge at 9:30 a.m. followed by a general meeting at 1 p.m. Monday and May 12 and 19 at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave..

There will be no meeting or games scheduled for May 26 due to the Memorial Day holiday.

Community meeting

Southgate Trust for Improvement of Neighborhood Government members will meet for a brief social time with coffee and snacks at 7 p.m. Monday at Southgate Elementary School, 290 Shetlands Lane.

The general monthly membership meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. following the social time. Members will welcome guest speaker Del. Mary Ann Love. The presentation will include a view of the 2008 Maryland legislative session.
