Friday Lacrosse: Spalding girls advance to A Conference quarterfinals

Chesapeake boys upset Arundel; Severna Park captures first place
Junior Danielle Kirk scored four goals and collected an assist, and junior Stefanie Paskal added three goals and two assists as the fifth-ranked Cavaliers won their IAAM A conference first-round game at home, beating Mercy, 12-8.

Spalding travels to Notre Dame Prep for a 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday.

Senior Christy Konrad had three goals and an assist, and senior Katie Kirk added two goals and an assist for Spalding. Junior Cosette Larash made 13 saves.

ST. MARY'S 8, MARYVALE 7: Caroline Cochran's goal with 36 seconds remaining in the second half gave St. Mary's a win in the first round of the IAAM A Conference playoffs.

The goal came on the tail end of a fast break, and it was set up by Joanna Dalton.

Cochran scored a game-high three goals and added an assist.

"Caroline is a strong, physical speciman, so she just buried it in there," said St. Mary's coach Sue Chittim.

The Saints won the ensuing draw and controlled possession till the end of the contest. They advance to play at Severn on Tuesday.

Goalie Natalie Wills stopped 14 shots, many of them from in close.

"She was absolutely phenomenal," Chittim said.

ARUNDEL 19, CHESAPEAKE 8: Senior Alyssa Fowler had eight goals and four assists to pace the Wildcats to their 10th win.

Senior Kiersten Jauschnegg and sophomore Hayley Ross scored four goals each for Arundel, which took a 13-2 lead by halftime. Senior Randall Winter added a goal and three assists, while senior Katie Riely made nine saves.

Sophomore Samantha Scruggs had three goals to lead the Cougars, while sophomore Rachel Cox added a goal and an assist. Junior Ali Meeks made 14 saves.

INDIAN CREEK 14, THE FIELD SCHOOL 5: Freshman Becky Kinder scored three goals and added an assist, and senior Devin Arneson chipped in three goals of her own, as the Eagles knocked off the visitors from Washington D.C.

Senior Roxie Davis added two goals and an assist for Indian Creek, which led, 7-3, at the break. Freshman Emma Baukhages had two goals, while sophomore Maddi Boudreau made 10 saves.

ANNAPOLIS 11, SOUTHERN 10: Maddie McKaig scored four goals, and the Panthers held off a second-half charge by the Bulldogs for the one-goal win.

Ali Brandenburg collected three goals and two assists, and Jody Cumberpatch scored twice for Annapolis, which took an 8-6 lead into the second half.

"We played a very good game," Panthers coach Dave Gehrdes said. "We did a nice job of controlling the tempo and controlling the draws in the second half."

Kimmy Wayson scored four goals for Southern, which also got four goals and an assist from Cara Manas.

CHESAPEAKE 9, ARUNDEL 8: Despite missing Lucas Flaig and Darren Martin, the Cougars were able to upset the Wildcats.

Ryan Serio scored four goals and assisted on three and Alex Everrett collected a hat trick, as Chesapeake scored three fourth-quarter goals to keep pace with Arundel.

"We came out, and we were fired up for a change," Cougars coach Brian McGeeney said. "Tonight really showed what we can really do. We came together as a team and hustled."

Cougars goalkeeper Lee Cook stopped 19 shots.

Tyler Koorey scored two goals for the Wildcats (7-7).

SEVERNA PARK 11, SOUTH RIVER 5: Junior Sam Jones had three goals, including a crucial fourth quarter tally with a man-down, and added two assists as the fourth-ranked Falcons used a quick start and quicker finish to take the lead in the county standings.

Junior Sean Price added two goals and an assist for Severna Park, which scored on five of its first six shots in the first quarter. Junior Simon Ruppert notched two scores, followed by seniors Jeff McGuire and Mason Mundell with one goal and one assist each.

"We just took advantage of our possessions and Sam's goal in the fourth was a big one," Severna Park coach Larry Kramer said. "We scored three goals in a two-minute span late in the fourth quarter, and that gave us some space."

Senior Andrew Gvozden capped a stout defensive effort with 11 saves for the Falcons.

Juniors Matt Gregoire and Drew Lee had two goals each for the Seahawks, who held the advantage in shots and ground balls and a decisive 14-5 advantage in faceoffs.

With the loss, South River dropped back to a three-way tie for second with Broadneck and Northeast, each a game behind Severna Park.

GILMAN 12, ST. MARY'S 10: The Saints took a five-goal lead in the third quarter against the Greyhounds, but foul troubles made things difficult in the second half.

Matt Lamon scored three goals for St. Mary's, and Neill Lewnes and Scott Hopmann added two, but the Saints committed five fouls in the third quarter, and Gilman took advantage.

"It made us play too much defense, and we tired out," St. Mary's coach Matt Hogan said. "It made them a lot more comfortable offensively. They weren't comfortable before that."

SOUTHERN 5, ANNAPOLIS 4, 2OT: Zach Jackson scored on a diving shot with 2:49 left in the second overtime to push the Bulldogs past the Panthers.

Southern took a 3-1 lead into the second half and scored once in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Jackson scored two goals, and Jimmy Gibbons led the Bulldogs with three assists, along with a goal.

Brian Gehrdes led Annapolis with two goals, and Andrew Proulx and Nate Poerstal added the other Panther scores.
