Severn School Headmaster Doug Lagarde announced yesterday the appointment of Julian Domenech, 41, as the new athletic director at the institution, beginning July 1.
Domenech, a Severn School alumnus from the Class of 1984, is the women's lacrosse coach and assistant athletic director at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C Domenech replaces Charles "Tank" Duckett, who announced his resignation from Severn School earlier this year.
In addition to graduating from the school, his father Julian Domenech Sr. was a teacher and head of the Upper School for nearly 27 years.
"I spent the first 20 years of my life on the Severn School campus living in faculty housing" said Domenech. "I feel like I'm coming home."
Domenech Sr. is pleased, too. "My parents are extremely excited about this move for me and my family, and were very helpful in the decision process. I want to thank Mr. Lagarde for this wonderful opportunity."
"We are delighted to welcome Julian back to Severn. His wide-ranging experience at Pfeiffer in both coaching and administration coupled with his knowledge of the Severn community make him a great and natural fit," Lagarde said.
As Athletic Director, Domenech will report and be responsible to the headmaster for the effective and efficient operations of the total athletic program, including 37 athletic teams. He was selected from more than 45 applicants.
As head women's lacrosse coach at Pfeiffer, Domenech led the Lady Falcons to a 57-25 record (since his start in 2003) and three CVAC tournament championships. The Lady Falcons finished in the top 10 in the national rankings the four seasons under Domenech, who earned CVAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2007.
Domenech is a graduate of Pfeiffer University, earning a B.A. in business administration in 1989 and an MBA in 1992.
He played lacrosse and soccer throughout his college career, earning lacrosse MVP in 1989.
Severn School officially opened its new Edward St. John Athletic Center earlier this month, housing a multi-purpose field house, fitness and training centers, athletic hall of fame, and concession area, among other features. Installation of artificial turf fields is expected to begin next month.
