Pasadena: St. Jane students honored for achievements

The Fort Smallwood Optimist Club recently held its annual oratory competition at St. Jane Frances School where several students received awards.
In the girls' category, first place went to Shannon Krehely who received a $100 savings bond and advanced to the next level of the competition. Monica Perumattam earned second place and Marissa Spratley won third place. Each received a $50 savings bond.

In the boys' category, first place went to Ben Armero who received a $100 savings bond and will advance to the next level of competition. Nick Armero earned second place and Michael Wagner and Nicholas Spicher tied for third. All three boys received a $50 savings bond.

'Indian Lifeways'

Daniel "Firehawk" Abbott and May Hope "Keziah" Billings, both descendents of Maryland Indian Tribes will be on hand at Hancock's Resolution, 2795 Bayside Beach for its American Indian Lifeways event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow.

Activities will include an introduction to the Indian culture, fire-making, cooking, making and using stone and bone tools, Indian clothing, archery and javelin demonstrations and more.

The cost is $2.50 per person or $5 per family. Friends of Hancock Resolution members are admitted for free.

Two burger nights

The Lake Shore Baseball 8 and under travel team will host a burger night at Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries, 4131 Mountain Road from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Diners should mention Lake Shore Baseball so the team can earn 20 percent of the sale.

The Riviera Beach Girls softball league will benefit from a fundraiser night at the restaurant from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

The league also will receive a percentage of the sale when diners mention the league upon ordering

History walk

Head to Fort Smallwood Park at 9500 Fort Smallwood Road from 10 to 11:30 a.m. today to learn about the natural, social and military history of the property.

Visits to Battery Hartshorne and the park's old barracks will be included along with a write-up of the park's history.

A set of maps of the park will be given to those participating in the walk. For details, contact the park office at 410-222-0087.

BPIA meeting

Boulevard Park Improvement Association will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the community clubhouse, 1269 Magothy Road.

Nominations for the executive board will take place at the meeting. To be nominated, residents must be in good standing with the association, having paid their 2007-08 community dues and attended at least two regular meetings since June.

The seniors of Northeast High School will host a craft fair and flea market from 7 a.m. to noon today in the school parking lot, 1121 Duvall Highway.

Appreciation week

The High Point PTA needs volunteers for its teacher and staff appreciation week Monday through Friday during school hours.

This is a week for parents and students to give thanks to the faculty and stuff for educating and guiding the students.

Bodkin news

Bodkin Elementary, 8320 Ventnor Road, will host a kindergarten open house and parent orientation from 9:30 to 10:30 on Tuesday

Future students can get a sneak peek of their classroom while parents are introduced to the school and its kindergarten program.

The school will have a tree dedication in memory of the late vice principal, Bill Bowers, who recently passed away. The dedication will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the school.

Caregiver program

The Department of Aging and Disabilities will host a National Family Caregiver Support Program Workshop at the Pasadena Senior Center, 4103 Mountain Road from 1 to 3 p.m. on three consecutive Wednesdays May 14 through 28.

The first workshop, "Is there help out there," will focus on the resources and services available to help care for older individuals, what Medicare and Medicaid covers as well as where to find financial help.

The second workshop, "Elder Speak; when a loved one won't listen," will focus on the way younger and older adults communicate on different wave lengths, causing frustration and resentment for both parties.

The third and final workshop, "I'm not waving, I'm drowning," will focus on emotions and coping skills. Participants can learn about the range of emotions caregivers experience and how to manage them.
