A 23-year-old man was killed and a 20-year-old woman was critically injured Wednesday morning in a fiery crash on a Severn roadway, county police and Fire Department officials said.
The two were traveling west in the 7600 block of WB&A Road at about 4 a.m. when they crashed into a tree, said Capt. Harry Steiner, a county Fire Department spokesman. The impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames, but neither person was trapped inside the wreckage.
Paramedics declared Jamel Alexander Cross, 19, of Lanham, dead at the scene. The car he was in crashed into a lawn ornament and several parked cars on the 7000 block of WB&A Road before catching fire, county police said.
Mr. Cross and another passenger, Charleigh Marie Poulin, 21, of Odenton, were riding in a Toyota Scion driven by Michael John Sweeny also of Odenton.
A change in the road's grading caused the car to bottom out near Queenstown Road, causing Mr. Sweeny to lose control, according to a police report. The car then spun and drifted toward the right side of the road, eventually driving into a yard and hitting an ornamental steel wagon wheel.
The Scion continued to spin into a neighboring yard and hit a parked Ford box truck, knocking it back 25 feet and into and a parked Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder then hit two more parked cars. The Scion stopped partially on top of the cab of the truck, where it caught fire.
Ms. Poulin was thrown from the car during the accident, while the driver was able to pull himself from the wreckage. Mr. Cross, who police said was belted into the back left seat, was fatally injured.
Mr. Sweeny was sent by ambulance and Ms. Poulin was sent by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore both in serious but stable condition.
Police said speed was a factor and the state's attorney is reviewing the case.
