Plans progress for first Homeless Resource Day

With the state's first Homeless Resource Day a week away, its organizers say they are closing in on their goals.
Organizers are seeking 300 volunteers - one person for every homeless individual they hope to help - and they are nearing that number with 220 volunteers for the event that will take place at Glen Burnie High School on March 29.

The volunteers are needed to run both the event itself from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and set up in the high school on the prior evening. Already, 50 people have volunteered for the setting up, said organizer Chris Poulson.

They have confirmed the assistance of 55 agencies, including the Motor Vehicle Administration, the Department of Health and the Department of Social Services. The agencies will help provide a number of services to homeless people, including HIV testing, blood pressure screening and help with attaining birth certificates.

A dentist and mental health professionals will also be on hand.

Ms. Poulson said resource day officials are still looking for donations of non-perishable food, new socks, new underwear and travel size toiletries.

Monetary contributions are being accepted and can be made out to "Homeless Resource Day." Checks may be sent to 80 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Marci Kennai, director of the county Department of Social Services, said the event will be the first of its kind in Maryland.

"While these services are commonplace for most county residents, we must not dismiss their importance in helping the less fortunate pursue their basic needs for survival," County Executive John R. Leopold said in a prepared statement in January.

"Anne Arundel County employees, as well as state and local nonprofit agencies, will be working hard to provide services. However, the success of Homeless Resource Day is ultimately reliant upon volunteers."

Mr. Leopold's office and other organizers expect to offer help to as many as 300 homeless people.

"The point is to provide a one-stop shop for homeless services," said Mr. Leopold.
