Glen Burnie West: Garden club members to hold mystery auction

The Ferndale Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ferndale Senior Center, 7205 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd.
Members will participate in a mystery auction. They should take a handmade item wrapped in a plain brown paper bag. There should be a clue in the form of a poem on the outside of the bag that hints at the contents. Club member Kathy Shatt will auction off the items to the highest bidders.

New members and guests are welcome. Membership dues cost $6.

Quarter auction

The Friends of the Prom Breakfast will hold a quarter auction from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company Hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd.

Proceeds will benefit the North County High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association's after prom breakfast.

Admission is $12. Each ticket holder also will receive a $10 roll of quarters and one auction paddle.

Items have been donated from Home Interiors, Tastefully Simple, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Longaberger, Pampered Chef and Creative Memories. Each item is placed in a bidding category. A prize valued at $10 to $25 is one quarter, $26 to $50 is two quarters, $51 to $75 is three quarters and $76 and higher is four quarters. Each participant will receive a bidding paddle with a number when they arrive. Participants can choose which prizes they want to bid on. After the bidding is closed, the auctioneer will draw winning numbers from among those who paid their quarters to bid. It would cost approximately $40 in quarters to bid on every prize.

Door prizes also will be awarded.

Youth dance

The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Company will sponsor its monthly youth dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the fire hall, 4 S. Broadview Blvd.

The dance is for children ages 14 and younger.

Parents must sign their children in and out of the dance.

Admission is $5. Music will be provided by a disc jockey. Refreshments will be sold.

Garden preparation

Gardener and farmer Bob Brown will share tips on garden preparation at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road.

The program is free and open to the public.

The Maryland Transit Administration will visit the center from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday to issue reduced fare cards to seniors. Seniors can use the cards to ride the light rail, metro or transit buses.

The cards are free; however, seniors must be at least 65 years old and present proof of their age.

The center will offer a mouse keyboard workshop from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. The workshop is for new computer users and is a prerequisite to taking the beginning computer class at the center.

Participants will learn how to control the mouse and use the directional keys.

The cost is $5. Advance registration is required.

Surgical weight loss

The University of Maryland Center for Weight Management and Wellness will offer a free seminar on surgical weight loss from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Courtney Conference Center, located on the lower level of the Tate Cancer Center, 305 Hospital Drive.

Dr. Mark Kligman will be the speaker.

Surgical weight loss therapy is for patients between the ages of 18 and 60 who have a body mass index over 40, or a body mass index between 35 and 40 and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, sleep apnea or heart disease.

Holy Trinity Seniors

The Holy Trinity Seniors Club will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the church hall, 7436 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd.

This month's meeting is devoted to a safety defense class taught by Sharon Kluth of Maryland Safe Defense. Women of all ages are welcome to attend the presentation about personal, family and home defense.

All seniors ages 55 or older are welcome to join the club.

Shrimp feast

American Legion Post 40 will sponsor its annual shrimp feast from 7 p.m. to midnight on April 19 at the post hall, 500 Fifth Ave. S.E.

Tickets cost $35. Food will be served from 7 to 11 p.m. Music will be provided by the "Maria Rose" band from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The menu will include steamed shrimp, fried shrimp, pit-roasted beef and ham, Maryland crab soup, shrimp Creole and rice, Italian sausage, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, coleslaw, potato salad, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, vegetables and dip and sheet cake. Draft beer and sodas will be served. A cash bar will be open.

Fellowship dinner

Glen Burnie Baptist Church invites the community to share in its Wednesday night fellowship dinners.

Dinner will be served at 5:15 p.m. every Wednesday at the church, 7524 Old Stage Road.

The cost is $3.

Marley Milers

New walkers are welcome to join the Marley Milers indoor walking program for a safe, climate-controlled place to exercise. Participants walk in Marley Station mall from 7:30 to 10 a.m. before the stores open Monday through Friday.

The mall is located at 7900 Ritchie Highway.

Harbor Hospital sponsors the program. Membership is free.

Knights' bingo

The Holy Trinity Knights of Columbus Council 3413 offers bingo games every Tuesday night at the Columbian Center, 335 N. Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.

The doors open at 5 p.m. for seating. Games begin at 7:15 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded, including two $1,000 jackpot games.

The cash prize for regular bingo games depends on the number of attendees. If there are more than 100 players, regular games will pay $75 and special games will pay $100. If there are fewer than 100 players, the prize will be $50 for regular games and $75 for special games.

Smoking is not permitted in the hall; however, two intermission breaks are taken. There is a covered outdoor area that smokers may use.

Refreshments will be sold from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

The Glen Burnie Improvement Association is selling commemorative Centennial T-shirts in honor of the association's 100th birthday.

The shirts cost $10. In addition, the association is selling large magnets for $5.

Baseball registration

The North Glen Sports Club is accepting registration for its spring baseball and softball programs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the North Glen Improvement Association hall, 303 Wellham Ave.

Registration should be accompanied by a copy of the child's birth certificate.

The baseball program is open to boys ages 5 to 18, and the softball program is open to girls ages 4 to 19.

The girls' softball registration will cost $50 for children ages 4 to 8. The cost will increase to $85 for girls ages 9 to 19.

Driver safety class

Baltimore Washington Medical Center will offer the AARP Driver Safety program from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center, located on the third floor of the hospital, 301 Hospital Drive.

The cost of the class is $10.

Advance registration is required. Class size is limited. The course is designed to help older drivers improve driving skills and prevent automobile accidents. For more details, call the hospital at 410-787-4367.

Parents' night out

The North Arundel Aquatic Center will host a Parents' Night Out program from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the county swimming pool, 7888 Crain Highway.

Advance registration is required. The registration fee is $12 per child. Parents may drop off their children ages 6 to 11 beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. They should take a swimsuit and towel. Planned activities include games, swimming, movies and pizza.

Youth protection

The Four River District of the Boy Scouts of America will offer youth protection certification training at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, 5 Second Ave. S.E.

The training is required for all adults who work as volunteers with the Boy Scouts.
