During this holiday weekend and in these uncertain economic times, Leo Zerhusen with He Opens the Path to Everyone, or HOPE Inc., reminds us that many families in the area are in need of help from their more fortunate neighbors.
"HOPE Inc. is in need of furniture donations," he wrote in an e-mail this week.
In all of last year, the Linthicum-based charity helped 35 families. Already in 2008 it has helped 15 and "at this rate we will reach out to around 50 to 65 families" this year, Mr. Zerhusen said.
When doing spring cleaning, think of HOPE. The group provides families with furniture and other necessities in setting up a home. It needs dressers, end tables, twin beds (with mattress, box springs and a frame), small kitchen tables and lamps, among other home furnishings.
Because there's not enough space for HOPE to store a lot of furniture, the volunteers ask that donors give them plenty of notice before items can be picked up.
HOPE plans to host two yard sales this summer - one in June and a second in July. The group is looking for donations to the sale, items that would sell for $5 to $10. The organization will provide a receipt if donors take along an itemized list when dropping off the merchandise.

'Ticket to ride'
As seen by their popularity as songs of choice on this season's "American Idol," Beatles tunes are hot again, and the arts center is getting in on the act. The Main Stage at 194 Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park will present the show "Revolution - The Beatles Tribute" at 3 p.m. on April 13. The Performing Arts Association of Linthicum is bringing the show to town.
The performers bring back the melodies of John, Paul, George and Ringo with such '60s hits as "A Hard Day's Night," "Help!" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Tickets are $22. Students who are accompanying a member of PAAL will be admitted free.

Horsing around
Horses will be the subject of a mini-camp from 10 a.m. to noon April 19 at the library, 400 Shipley Road.
The Linthicum 4-H Hi-Riders will host the event.
Children ages 6 to 12 can join the riders for a morning of games and crafts.
Because the program is limited to 24 participants, the riders ask that anyone interested in the program register in advance.
In keeping with the theme, during April the library will display model horses and ponies in the case near the front door. The display is courtesy of the 4-H Hi-Riders.
For more information, call the library at 410-222-6265.
