Prep Notebook: Northeast's Fleming stands at top of state lightweights

Wins Senior Classic to finish season 38-1
Maurice Fleming couldn't settle for two state championships and an MIAA title.

Northeast's 140-pound standout wrestler received the Outstanding Lower-weight award at last week's Senior All-Star Classic after pinning Mount St. Joseph's Kevin Bohlman in 1 minute, 27 seconds and putting a 12-8 decision on Chris Stinnett, Glenelg's 2A/1A state champion.

Stinnett was 30-3 during the season.

Fleming (38-1) finished his high school career with a 21-6 technical fall over Northern's Jeff Williams in the state finals to win his second title at 140. Fleming won a private school championship with Gilman in 2006.

"When he's on, he's in their faces constantly, so sometimes his opponents aren't sure what to do," Northeast coach Mark McCalpin said.

Fleming pinned his way into the semifinals before handing Paint Branch senior Steve Miller a 21-6 technical fall for the chance at a third title.

Fleming was 40-0 as a junior, and he ended his Northeast wrestling career with a 78-1 record. His only loss came at the Altoona (Pa.) Duals to Central Mountain sophomore Andrew Alton, who took a 45-0 record into the state semifinals before settling for a second consecutive third-place finish.

"Maurice just wasn't wrestling his match against Alton," McCalpin said.

Annapolis' three-time state champion Bubby Graham suffered a 3-2 defeat to Owings Mills' Tony Mack - the 2A/1A runner-up.

Mack, who finished the season 37-1 following a 3-1 loss to South Carroll's Zac Stavish in the 160 finals, used a late escape to hold off Graham.

Graham earned his third championship in as many weight classes (145, 152 and 160) for the Panthers by pinning North Harford's Tom Stewart in 2:33 at the state finals.

Graham will wrestle at American University in the fall and hopes to be a national champion before he's done.

STEPPING DOWN: After nine seasons as Annapolis' head coach, Sfakiyanudis has decided to step down to spend more time with his family.

Sfakiyanudis led the Panthers to a 17-3 record this last season - 10-2 in the county. Seven wrestlers qualified for the 4A/3A East Regional, and John and Bubby Graham won titles to qualify for the state tournament.

Andrew Lazzor, Chesapeake's boys' basketball coach, resigned from his post last week, following a loss to Arundel in the Class 4A East Region quarterfinals.

Lazzor coached the Cougars to a 7-62 record during his three years at Chesapeake, including a 3-20 finish in 2008.

DESTINATIONS: Severna Park's Pat Morrison signed a national letter-of-intent to play football with Wagner College in the fall.

Morrison, an All-County defensive selection last season, played quarterback and defensive back for the Falcons in 2007. He threw for 1,287 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 689 yards and eight touchdowns.

Morrison will play defensive back for the Seahawks, who finished 7-4 in the Northeast Conference in 2007.
