Linthicum: 4 essay winners lauded at Overlook

Overlook Elementary School, 401 Hampton Road, announced that four of its fifth-graders placed high in the annual short story and writing contest sponsored by the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights.
Shane Loudermilk. and Austin Hagen won third place for their submissions on the topic "Winter Is." Receiving honorable mentions were Katie Anderson and Omer Qureshi.

Overlook's PTA will hold its next Chick-Fil-A from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 14 at the restaurant at the Centre at Glen Burnie, 6709 Ritchie Highway. A portion of each patron's order will go to the school. Customers should mention they are participating in the Overlook Elementary fundraiser.

Holy Week services

Several churches in the community announced Easter events planned this week.

Friendship Church of the Brethren, 217 Mansion Road, will host a love feast and foot washing at 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday. From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday the church will have its annual Easter egg hunt, which will include games, prizes and treats.

Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, will hold a Holy Communion service at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Holly Run Chapel on the church grounds. At 7 p.m. tomorrow, the church will have a worship service with Holy Communion in the main sanctuary.

On Good Friday, the church will join in the Community Crosswalk that begins at noon at St. Philip Neri Church, 6405 S. Orchard Road. There will be 7 p.m. Tenebrae Service in the Linthicum Heights UMC sanctuary.

At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, the church will host its annual Sunday school Easter pancake breakfast in the fellowship hall.

Day Spring Presbyterian Church, which meets at 116 Marydell Road, will hold a Good Friday service at 6 p.m.

Linthicum Seventh-day Adventist Church, 901 Andover Road, will host a special program "Journey to the Cross, a Prayer Walk," from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

St. John's Lutheran Church, 300 W. Maple Road, will hold services at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday and 7 p.m. Good Friday. For more information, contact the church at 410-859-0020.

St. Philip Neri Church, 6405 S. Orchard Road, will hold a service at 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday. At noon on Good Friday there will be a prayer service at the church, followed by the beginning of the community Crosswalk. The Crosswalk will start at St. Philip's and include stops at Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, St. Christopher's Episcopal Church and St. John's Lutheran Church. St. Philip's also will offer a 3 p.m. Good Friday prayer service with a reading of the Passion and Holy Communion.

Spring cleaning

The arrival of spring means it's time to break out the gloves and rakes and clean out Linthicum Park.

All area residents are invited to take their own gloves and rakes to help out during the first park cleanup of the year. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on March 29 at the park, located on Benton Avenue There also will be cleanup days on April 12 and May 10.

The annual cleanups of the park are sponsored by the Linthicum-Shipley Improvement Association and the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights.

Diabetes discussion

Diabetes will be the subject of discussion when Margie McKenna, a registered nurse at St. Agnes Hospital, is the guest speaker April 3 at the next meeting of Linthicum Chapter 2244 of the AARP. Ms. McKenna is a certified diabetes educator at the Baltimore hospital.

The meeting will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 300 W. Maple Road. It will begin with an 11 a.m. board meeting, followed by a social hour before the 1 p.m. main meeting.

The chapter's hospitality committee seeks volunteers who would like to arrive at 10:30 a.m. to set up the room for the meeting.

Dues will be collected. The chapter asks that members take nonperishable food to donate to the North County Emergency Outreach Network.

The chapter's Lunch Bunch will meet at 2 p.m. on March 27 at the Double T Diner, 1 Mountain Road in Glen Burnie..
