Maxwell speeds up arts magnet in city

Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell is trying to move up the start date of an arts magnet program planned for Bates Middle School in Annapolis.
The program was supposed to open in the 2010-11 school year, but Dr. Maxwell said he will ask the county Board of Education for permission to open it in 2009-10. If approved, students from other parts of the county will be able to apply to attend.

Moving up the start date for the Bates program will require $250,000 for planning in 2008-09, according to documents that accompany the superintendent's recommendation.

Start-up costs will include $150,000 for laptop computers and $95,000 for musical instruments, as well as $5,000 for a kiln and $3,000 for potter wheels.

Dr. Maxwell's office is working on getting outside funding such as grants to help pay for the program.

The arts program also ties into a larger effort to put themed academic programs in the county school system's middle and high schools during the next few years. That plan was approved by the school board in September.
