  • Spalding runner-up in private school wrestling

    Junior Mike Still was runner-up at 113 pounds to lead Archbishop Spalding to second place in the team standings at the Maryland Independent Schools state wrestling tournament.

    Still was seeded third, but upset second-seeded Matt Halkos of Pallotti in the semifinals, earning an 8-0 major decision. However, Still could not repeat the feat against top-seeded Corey Huntley of Archbishop Spalding in the finals and fell 6-0.

    When Salaman Riddell transferred to Old Mill, all he wanted to do was win. So far, that’s just about all he’s done.

    But two county championships aren’t enough. Riddell wants a third.

    “It’s more of a motivator for me because I know I have to go in there and win my third in a row,” said Riddell, who’s got a Class 4A/3A East Region and state title in his collection. “It’s not going to look right if I win the first two and not the third.”

    SOUTH RIVER 66, NORTHEAST 55: Dre Bell had a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds as the Seahawks built a 13-point halftime lead and never looked back. Jahair Jones chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds for South River.

    Marcus Dentley led the Eagles with 19 points.

  • Spalding posts playoff win over Severn

    With her team trailing by a point after the first quarter, Jade Scaife knew that she and her teammates had to step up their effort, particularly in the low post. The Cavaliers did just that, opening the second quarter with a 13-0 run and never looking back as they routed the Admirals 72-41 to advance in the IAAM A conference playoffs.

    Scaife finished the game with 17 points to go along with eight rebounds and two steals.

  • Old Mill boys upset Arundel

    Old Mill hasn’t lost since Jan. 3. Arundel has remained unbeaten all season. Something had to give last night when two of the county’s best teams clashed, and it took until the final play of regulation to decide matters.

    Gavin Salmond took a long inbounds pass near halfcourt and took it the rest of the way, scoring on a layup at the buzzer to give the fifth-ranked Patriots a 61-59 win over the top-ranked Wildcats.
