  • Maryland roars by Miami

COLLEGE PARK — Last night, Maryland rebounded from Saturday’s miserable 27-point loss at Virginia.

Actually, the Terrapins just rebounded, period.

They beat Miami on the boards in the second half, 22-10, which enabled them to rally past the Hurricanes late in the game for a 75-70 victory at Comcast Center.

  • Flacco states his case for contract extension

OWINGS MILLS – Joe Flacco delivered crisp spirals all over the field at Gillette Stadium in the AFC championship game Sunday night, nearly leading the Baltimore Ravens to the Super Bowl.

By outdueling New England Patriots legendary quarterback Tom Brady, Flacco might have made his most convincing argument that he’s worthy of a lucrative contract extension.

During the Ravens’ 23-20 loss to the Patriots, Flacco completed 22 of 36 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for a 95.4 quarterback rating.

  • Disappointed Ravens expect pain to linger

OWINGS MILLS – Packing their belongings while cleaning out their lockers Monday one day after their Super Bowl dream was ruined again for the fourth year in a row, the Baltimore Ravens’ inventory included some unwanted baggage.

Mainly, carrying around the pain of a lost opportunity caused primarily by kicker Billy Cundiff shanking a chip shot field goal and Lee Evans’ dropped pass and ruminating about whether the AFC North champions’ window to contend is slamming shut.

  • Purple Caravan visits Glen Burnie

Solaris Sasso, 9, poses for a picture Friday in Glen Burnie with his cousin and brother, Anthony Breland, 7, and Sergio Sasso, 5, with two Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders. A caravan of Ravens cheerleaders pumped up purple-clad fans at several locations around the region in anticipation of Sunday’s AFC Championship game against New England. Was it a coincidence that the boys were all wearing "Angry Bird" hats for a chance to meet Ravens mascot Poe?

  • Ravens remain wary of Welker

OWINGS MILLS - The conversation all week has rarely strayed from an enthusiastic discourse on the New England Patriots' ultra-productive tight end tandem of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

When the moment has really gotten crucial for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady over the years, though, he has consistently relied upon one man more than any other: wide receiver Wes Welker.

  • Ravens' Smith gradually caught on

OWINGS MILLS - The football would routinely glance off the hands of Torrey Smith, and he would look down as if they had betrayed him.

Back during August training camp and occasionally in the regular season, the Baltimore Ravens' rookie wide receiver was struggling with his confidence and his catching technique.

He would take his eyes off the path of the ball instead of looking it into his hands the way he had been taught, a fundamental gaffe that threatened to become a trend.

  • Terrapins need to get tough for ACC play

COLLEGE PARK - The level of play that led to seven straight victories in December wasn't sufficient to carry the Maryland basketball team in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at North Carolina State on Sunday.

Count that as another teachable moment for Mark Turgeon's Terrapins.

  • Derrick Mason predicts close game between Ravens, Texans

OWINGS MILLS – A stalemate could be in the offing when two of the top running games and elite rushing defenses collide Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

If running backs Ray Rice and Arian Foster and linebackers Ray Lewis and Brian Cushing counteract each other during the Baltimore Ravens' AFC divisional playoff game against the Houston Texans, this clash could come down to the quarterbacks.

  • Ravens: Redding, Birk look to ‘seize every moment’

OWINGS MILLS — Cory Redding never won a championship before, not in high school growing up in Houston, not playing for the Texas Longhorns in college and definitely not in the NFL.

Having experienced the abject gloom of a winless season with the Detroit Lions three years ago, the Baltimore Ravens’ veteran defensive end is cherishing this time as the AFC North champions are hoping to advance to the Super Bowl.

  • DeCosta happy to remain with Ravens

OWINGS MILLS - Rather than pursue general manager jobs that he was regarded as the frontrunner to land, Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta has decided to remain with the AFC North franchise.

The Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and the Indianapolis Colts had all requested permission to interview DeCosta for their respective general manager vacancies.

However, DeCosta, 40, preferred to remain with the Ravens. He declined to pursue the positions, including an intriguing opening with the Bears.
