Your Say

  • Your Say: Leopold security detail

County Executive John Leopold apparently uses his security detail for just about anything, from picking up campaign checks to dropping off portraits of himself and his cat. The detail cost taxpayers $86,000 in police overtime last year. Given all the pressure to cut the budget, should taxpayers continue to pay for this?

You use the word “apparently” in accusing the county executive of using “his security detail for just about anything...” seemingly illicit activities by his security detail.

  • Your Say: Old Army depot

The state wants to buy the old Army munitions depot off Ordnance Road in Glen Burnie and redevelop it as a warehouse and distribution center for the Port of Baltimore. One advisory panel has suggested using it as a dredge spoil dump site. What do you think should be done with this land?

  • Your Say: Student member of the board

Three county students are vying to be the student member of the county school board. The student elected gets full voting rights — the only student in the country with a say on all school board matters. Do you think students should have a say in all school board votes, including spending priorities?
    ———
No, I don’t think students should have a vote on any of the issues. They are there to learn the workings of our government, not to fight for issues.

  • Your Say: Binding arbitration

County Executive John R. Leopold wants to end binding arbitration for public safety unions, something voters approved in a referendum.  Supporters argue the county can’t afford to have a contract dispute go against them, union representatives argue the process has never created a problem. Should the County Council end binding arbitration or keep the current system?
    ———
If you take binding arbitration out of the process then you in effect have no negotiation. The system that is in place now seems to work.

  • Your Say: Linthicum light rail

Do you believe that light rail, which has stops in Linthicum, Ferndale, Glen Burnie and at BWI, has been a positive or negative addition to north county?
    ———
No project that affects this many is all pro or all con, but there is no doubt that the light rail has made it easier for people from Baltimore to come to the county and get jobs, just like it has made it easier for the unsavory to come to the county and commit crimes of many kinds.

  • Your Say: Same sex marriages

The two state senators representing north county, Ed DeGrange and Bryan Simonaire, oppose same-sex marriage. Do you believe they’re on the right side on this issue?

    ———

  • Your Say: Preventing crimes

What can we as citizens do to prevent more crimes like the one that took the life of Myra Cason on Jan. 28? What can county government do?

In a state where our right to carry a handgun is denied, we continue to be victimized by thugs and vermin who know that they hold they edge when it comes to confrontation. The courts have adjudicated the question on the responsibility of the police to protect the citizenry and have unequivocally answered the question with an emphatic 'No, the police do not have such a responsibility.'

  • Your Say: Table Games at Maryland slots casinos

Negotiations have started to put a question on a statewide ballot that would allow table games at slot machine casinos like the one being built at Arundel Mills mall. Do you think adding table games is the right choice for Maryland?

    ———

This is a no brainer. It should have been part of the original slots referendum as all the states surrounding Maryland were already raising the bar of their operations to table games in an attempt to hold on the Maryland’s money.

  • The shootings in Arizona kicked off a discussion about the impact of "vitriolic" political comment. Do you think the political dialogue in this community is too heated?

I know of no vitriolic statements being made in our local community, but I’m sure that a few examples on both sides of the aisle could be dredged up with little effort.
