  • Students prepare for annual spelling bee

Alexander Molina sounds like an athlete before a big game.

He talks about practice routines, believing in himself and "wanting it" enough.

But there aren't any wind sprints, extra time in the batting cage or repeated free throws on the horizon.

Alexander, 13, is training for a contest which will test his prowess with words and languages.  He's one of 28 contestants who will compete in the 24th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee later this month.

  • Schools end charter school contract

PAROLE - The county Board of Education today ended an agreement with the proposed operator of a new charter school in Laurel.

The Imagine Global Village Academy was going to be operated by Imagine Anne Arundel LLC. Plans for the school will go forward next year despite the change, said schools spokeswoman Moneka Monk.

The plan is part of Polm Co.'s proposal to build the charter elementary school so that it can build a 1,000-home project, RiverWood. Current zoning allows only 50 homes built on that property.

  • Parents: AACS policy limits their right to sue

Parents at a private school with campuses in Severn and Annapolis say they are concerned an enrollment contract would cost them the right to sue in the wake of recent lawsuits.

Annapolis Area Christian School’s enrollment agreement, which must be initialed by parents before a student can be enrolled in the school, tells parents to seek conciliation instead.

  • AACC: Tuition ‘increase is imminent’

It’s never a good sign when college officials promise tuition increases before they’ve even made their budget proposal.

“An increase is imminent,” said Melissa Beardmore, an Anne Arundel Community College administrator. “The board needs to decide by how much.”

During a meeting last week to discuss the options, the college’s board of trustees considered budget scenarios which could require increases in tuition and fees as high as $16 per credit hour.
