  • Health Talk: Women should talk to doctor about heart disease

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. In fact, one in three women die of heart disease.

Still, researchers have long known that women with heart disease tend to be diagnosed later than men. The explanations have ranged from women not seeking treatment as early as men to doctors not treating women as aggressively as men.

  • Covering the Bases: Medicare offers services for treating diabetes

I was just diagnosed as a diabetic. I know that altering my diet is a necessity. However, I do not know where to start. Does Medicare offer any services to help?

Medicare offers an array of services specific to the treatment of diabetes. The booklet called Medicare Coverage of Diabetes Supplies and Services is available online at www.medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-Medicare. This booklet outlines the services available under Medicare to help you manage your diabetes.

  • To Your Health: Making dinnertime family time

With an increasing number of after-school activities and late workdays, it’s no wonder few families eat dinner together. But studies show the effort pays off for children. A family meal usually takes less than an hour. Its effects, though, appear to endure.

Studies show that time spent around the dinner table can strengthen a family and improve your child’s health. Family meals can:

    • Lead to better grades in school.

    • Improve self-esteem.

  • Covering the Bases: Submit Medicare claim within calendar year of service date

I am new to Medicare. I saw my doctor two weeks ago and was wondering: Is there a time limit by when a doctor must submit a claim to Medicare?

Claims must be submitted within one calendar year from the date of service in order for Medicare to consider payment. To ensure timely payments, most providers submit claims promptly.

Medicare informs you of payment activities through a document called a Medicare Summary Notice. However, Medicare Summary Notices are only mailed to you on a quarterly basis.

  • Health Talk: The link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease

Heart health should always be a concern, but for people with diabetes, it is extremely important. Diabetes is a disorder in which your body doesn’t produce or process insulin correctly and is often directly connected to cardiovascular disease. In fact, a person with diabetes has twice the chance of developing heart disease as someone without this condition. Also there are several other factors to consider:

    • A diabetic who has had a previous heart attack has a much greater risk of having another.

  • Covering the Bases: Review options for medicine not covered by Part D plan

I was just prescribed a prescription (Xanax) for my nerves. I have Medicare Part D and my plan refuses to cover this medicine. Doesn’t Part D have to cover prescription medicines ordered by a physician?

  • Passport to Wellness: Jump start all of your New Year's resolutions

Did last year’s resolution to exercise make a repeat appearance on this year’s list? If you have a hard time keeping your resolution to get more exercise, you’re not alone.

Research shows that both men and women face several roadblocks on their way to fitness. In fact, half of those who start an exercise program throw in the towel within six months. Common barriers to regular exercise include:

    • Lack of time.
    • Feeling too tired.
    • Not enjoying exercise.
    • Lack of motivation to work out.

  • Surge in knee replacement surgeries

Tell your children to become knee surgeons. We’re going to need them.

In Anne Arundel County and around the world, knee replacements are surging as an increasingly younger crowd has refused to settle for disability.

“Back 15 or 20 years ago, patients were in their late 60s or 70s,” said Dr. Marc F. Brassard of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center in Annapolis. “Our average is 58 or 59 this year. It’s getting younger and younger as time goes on.”

  • Covering the Bases: When am I supposed to enroll into Medicare?

My 65th birthday is coming up, and I was wondering if I am automatically enrolled into Medicare or do I need to do something to enroll?

  • House of Hope opens new clinic

The Arundel House of Hope will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday for its new medical clinic on Crain Highway.

Baltimore Washington Medical Center physicians moved into the medical offices located in the same building as the House of Hope’s Day Center, at 514 N. Crain Highway, in late November, Executive Director Mario Berninzoni said. Prior to that, physicians had been seeing patients out of the Day Center.
